“I’m flexible” can mean many things. It might mean you can vary your start time, work different days, or occasionally accept an extra shift. A useful availability conversation names what is true. It should help you and the employer assess whether the role fits without turning a wish to be helpful into a promise you cannot keep.
Start with the exact posting
The Gateway seasonal posting reviewed here includes flexibility for evenings, weekends, holidays and non-business hours. That wording is a reason to ask precise questions. It does not tell you the schedule you would receive, guarantee a certain number of hours or establish the practice at another location. Confirm the current posting and discuss its conditions with the hiring team.
On paper, separate recurring availability from exceptions. Recurring availability is the ordinary pattern you can reliably offer. Exceptions are specific dates or temporary changes. Keep commuting time and other commitments in your own planning; you do not need to disclose private family, medical or financial details to this editorial website to make a realistic plan.
Replace a vague promise with a usable statement
Consider this invented practice answer: “I can usually work after 4 p.m. on weekdays and during the day on weekends. I have one previously arranged commitment next month. Which time windows are most important for this opening?” This is a structure, not a recommended schedule or a script to copy if it is untrue. It gives the other person something concrete to respond to.
If your availability depends on another schedule that is not yet confirmed, say so. “I expect to know on Tuesday” is more useful than pretending the uncertainty is settled. When a date changes, communicate through the employer’s designated channel. A note saved in your personal planner does not update an application or workplace system.
Ask about the shape of the commitment
- Which days or time windows are important for this particular opening?
- What does seasonal mean for the expected employment period?
- How are availability changes communicated and reviewed?
- What should a new hire understand about training times and scheduling?
These are questions to ask, not a statement of Victoria’s Secret & Co. policy. Avoid adding an assumed minimum-hours promise, notice period or automatic path to a permanent role. If the answer matters to whether you accept an offer, request clear information before making that decision.
Use a practical mismatch check
Imagine an invented role needs early-morning availability and your transport only works later. The useful next step is to clarify whether that condition is essential for the opening. It is not to conceal the conflict and hope it disappears. A role can be attractive and still be a poor practical fit at a particular time.
Finish your preparation with a short statement of what you can offer, one known exception if relevant, and the most important unanswered question. Keep your explanation accurate and respectful. You are trying to establish a workable commitment, not prove enthusiasm by making your calendar unlimited.
